Summary
- Google is testing a new two-person YouTube Premium plan, priced between the individual and family plan.
- It’s only being tested in a few markets, including India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong,
- YouTube’s new Premium tier resembles Spotify Duo, allowing two separate Premium accounts at a reduced cost.
After finally releasing
YouTube Premium Lite
recently in the US, Google is once again testing another new version of
YouTube Premium
, but this time it’s meant for two people.
According to a report from Moneycontrol, Google is testing a two-person YouTube Premium subscription tier in select markets, including India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. While it’s not being tested in the US just yet, it’s possible that if it’s successful it could become available at a later date, just like Premium Lite did.
YouTube spokesperson Alex McQuiston confirmed in a statement to The Verge that the company is indeed currently “experimenting” with a two-person YouTube Premium Plan.
“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost,” McQuiston said.

It’s like Spotify Duo but for YouTube Premium
The tier is slightly cheaper than the YouTube Premium family plan
YouTube / Pocket-lint
Android Police reports that in India, the new two-person YouTube Premium plan costs 219 Indian Rupees (about $2.60), which is slightly cheaper than the five-person family plan priced at 299 Indian Rupees (about $3.50). In India, the individual plan for YouTube Premium costs 140 Indian Rupees (about $1.70) per month.
If this new YouTube Premium tier ever comes stateside, it will cost significantly more than it does in India. However, its pricing there suggests it will be set between YouTube Premium’s individual and family plans, which makes sense given what it offers.
This plan would be quite beneficial for anyone living with a roommate or partner who wants to split the cost of YouTube Premium. It resembles
Spotify Duo
, a subscription plan offered by Spotify that allows two people living at the same address to share the benefits of Spotify Premium at a lower cost than paying for two individual plans. Like Spotify Duo, the two-person YouTube Premium plan allows users to maintain separate YouTube accounts.
As someone who has been subscribed to
YouTube Premium for over two years
, I admit it’s hard to live without it now, especially considering how flooded with ads YouTube has become. Hopefully, this two-person YouTube Premium subscription tier makes its way to the US someday.
