Migration’ Suggests Maybe Surviving That Killer Comet Wasn’t the Best Outcome

It’s rare that a disaster movie gets a sequel; imagine if they’d made Armageddon 2, or The Day After the Day After Tomorrow? But there’s seemingly more story to tell after that massive comet collided with Earth in 2020’s Greenland, and Gerard Butler will once again be called upon to protect his family in the post-apocalypse. The first trailer for Greenland 2: Migration is here, and it makes you wonder if perhaps surviving that first worldwide nightmare didn’t make these characters especially lucky after all.

Bunker claustrophobia is a given—shades of Silo and Fallout—and a dangerous surface level is also to be expected; the planet didn’t take kindly to being whacked by a cosmic object (if you’ll recall, Greenland‘s comet was named “Clarke”) at top speed. There are radioactive storms galore, and with Clarke fragments still raining down (it wouldn’t be a disaster movie without at least one tidal wave!), every day brings a new cataclysmic event.

Plus, as disaster movies have repeatedly taught us, nothing brings out the worst of humanity like the end of civilization as we know it.

But! The title promises migration—and once it’s determined there might be a livable patch of land somewhere in France, it’s going to take a lot of struggle to get there and hope for a true new beginning. Will they make it, or will the movie set up Greenland 3: It’s Still Doomsday?

Ric Roman Waugh directs a cast that also includes Morena Baccarin, Roman Griffin Davis, Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie. Greenland 2: Migration opens January 9, 2026.
