The Pebble Time 2 is the E Ink smartwatch of my dreams, and it’s launch is ticking closer

Summary

  • The final version of the Pebble Time 2 is officially set to ship later this year.
  • Notable features include a heart rate sensor, an RGB backlight, and a 30-day battery life.
  • CEO Migicovsky is excited about the smartwatch’s design and color options, though the latter is still subject to change.

Pebble recently became Pebble again after recovering the smartwatch company’s trademark, and now we’re getting a look at the final version of the Pebble Time 2 that’s set to ship to users later this year, following its initial reveal back in March.

Core Devices CEO and original Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky posted photos of the great-looking smartwatch to his blog. The Time 2 will release in four colors: black, silver, black with red accents, and silver with blue accents (though that could change, says Migicovsky). The watch also features a stainless steel front, back, and buttons with a very tactile-looking pattern on them.

Other key features include an RGB backlight, a built-in microphone, a compass, and a heart rate sensor. The 1.5-inch 64-color e-paper watch weighs 48g (1.70oz) with its strap and 32.5g (1.15oz) without the strap, making it pretty light. The Pebble Time 2 also offers 30-day battery life, which I’d argue is one of its best features.

The Core names are now gone

“This is basically the watch of my dreams,” says Migicovsky in the accompanying reveal YouTube video that’s part of his “Tick Talk” video podcast. The Pebble Time 2’s overall aesthetic reminds me of a mix of the original Pebble Time Steel and the Pebble Time 2 that never released back in 2017. Its design is a little more curved with a few fun color accents, depending on the model. As a long-time fan of the Pebble that’s thrilled the e-paper smartwatch is back from the dead, I really like the new look of the upcoming smartwatch, particularly the gray option.

In the blog post, Migicovsky says that anyone that’s already bought the Pebble 2 Duo ($150), the lower-end version of the e-paper smartwatch, can still switch to the higher-end Pebble Time 2. I opted to pre-order the Pebble Time 2 a few months ago and, after seeing the sleek final design, I’m happy I pulled the trigger so early.
