Volkswagen ID.2 SUV: Affordable Compact Electric SUV With Modern Design

Volkswagen is preparing to expand its lineup of affordable electric vehicles with the introduction of the Volkswagen ID.2 SUV, a compact model positioned to make electric mobility more accessible to a wider audience. Ahead of its official unveiling, the company has released new promotional images that highlight the direction of the vehicle’s design and features.

The ID.2 SUV represents Volkswagen’s ambition to democratize electric cars by offering a model that sits below the ID.3 in its range. Although the images revealed are not of the final production vehicle, they provide a clear indication of the design philosophy.

Created under the direction of Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s head of design, the SUV adopts a modern aesthetic inspired by the T-Roc, featuring smoother, rounded lines and distinctive lighting elements. Both the front and rear headlights are connected by a continuous light strip, reinforcing its contemporary look.

Inside, Volkswagen is expected to introduce significant upgrades in styling and technology compared to previous generations. Reports suggest the SUV will include a 12.9-inch central infotainment display, a 10.9-inch fully digital instrument cluster, and the return of physical buttons for ease of use—an element that many consumers have requested. According to Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s head of development, the company’s new wave of electric cars will reflect major improvements in both design and functionality.

Technically, the ID.2 SUV will be built on the updated MEB+ platform, which underpins Volkswagen’s future range of affordable EVs. This modular system will also be used for the hatchback version of the ID.2. The hatchback is expected to come with two battery options, 38 kWh or 56 kWh, offering a maximum range of up to 450 kilometers (approximately 280 miles) under the WLTP cycle. While Volkswagen has not yet released battery or performance details for the SUV version, it is expected to follow similar parameters while emphasizing efficiency and practicality.

Positioned below the ID.3, the ID.2 SUV is likely to have a starting price of around €30,000 (~$32,000), making it one of Volkswagen’s most affordable electric SUVs to date. This pricing strategy underscores the brand’s commitment to competing in the growing entry-level EV market.
