Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Reportedly Causing SSD Failures

The latest Windows 11 security update (KB5063878) has been linked to serious issues affecting certain solid-state drives (SSDs). Reports suggest that after installing the update, SSDs may become non-functional during large sequential data writes, typically around 50GB or more. While the problem has not been officially confirmed by Microsoft or SSD manufacturers, early accounts from users and testers indicate that the issue could cause drives to disappear from the operating system, rendering partitions inaccessible even after a system restart.

The issue first gained attention when an X (formerly Twitter) user, @Necoru_cat, reported drive failures while updating a game after installing the new security patch. Testing suggested that the malfunction stems from how the update interacts with drive caching and storage drivers during heavy write loads. Once triggered, the drive may lose connection at the OS level, with SMART data becoming unreadable and files inaccessible.

Although the malfunction has been observed in both SSDs and HDDs, reports highlight a higher incidence with SSDs using Phison controllers. Not all models appear to be affected, but specific drives have already been identified as vulnerable. These include:

  • Corsair Force MP600
  • SSDs with the Phison PS5012-E12 controller
  • KIOXIA Exceria Plus G4
  • Fikwot FN955
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO M.2 NVMe 3D SSD

At present, the scope of the issue appears limited, as widespread complaints have not surfaced across major public forums. However, the pattern of drive failures under certain workloads suggests the cause may lie in a regression within the Windows storage driver or kernel, which mishandles long sequential writes. This malfunction may lead to controller lock-ups, ultimately causing the OS to stop recognizing the affected drives.

Given the potential risks, users with SSDs containing Phison controllers or the models listed above are advised to avoid prolonged sequential writing tasks until more information is available. This includes large file transfers, extensive game updates, or similar operations that could trigger the bug.

As the situation develops, further testing and official clarification from Microsoft or hardware manufacturers will be necessary to determine the extent of the problem and provide a permanent fix. In the meantime, users are urged to back up important data and proceed cautiously with storage-intensive activities following the latest Windows 11 update.
